OK, let me get you up to speed. Trey Pearson, the lead singer of the Christian rock band Everyday Sunday, recently made a surprising announcement.
Despite his best efforts to fight his feelings for over 20 years, the popular artist is gay.
His letter to his fans explaining the decision to “come out” is well-written and full of honesty. His words evoke empathy and compassion over his two-decade fight with same-sex attraction. I’m not saying that makes it right, but it shows the human struggle so many Christians with same-sex attraction, in the church, have to face.
However, I do think Trey Pearson’s dad had the perfect response to his son’s shocking news—and it’s something every parent can learn from.
For the record, I have four boys and it would be so tough to handle this kind of news, just being honest, but I pray I would have the guts to respond like Trey Pearson’s father did.
Watch Trey share the story in this clip from The View.
Now, full disclosure, I believe the Bible is clear on the issue of homosexuality; namely, that the practice of it is a sin. But I’m not a homophobe and I don’t believe I’m better or more put together because I’m not a homosexual.
I just have Jesus. Period.
I also believe that the LGBT community needs to see a more compassionate, loving side of the church in real ways.
We are made in the image of God. That image is more important than our sexual preference, and the way we treat each other should reflect that dignity and compassion.
