This Beauty Queen Wasn’t Beautiful Enough—So She Quit

If you are gonna hold an international pageant, you have to be able to see international beauty.

Arna Ýr Jónsdóttir is the winner of Miss Iceland 2015.

She was recently told that she’s too fat and needed to lose weight before the upcoming Miss Grand International beauty contest.

A contest spokesperson demanded, “Stop eating breakfast, eat just salad for lunch and drink water every evening until the contest.”

Instead of dieting, the 20-year-old dropped out, just four days before the contest. She shared a photo on Instagram of the letter she sent to President of the MGI, Nawat Itsaragrisil, along with a Facebook post that shut down the fat-shaming for good:

“I intend to stand up for myself, women everywhere, and the Icelandic people,” she wrote. “I will not let them tell me I am too fat to look good on stage. I have quit. I will not be taking part in Miss Grand International.”

“Dear Mr. Nawat,

I am a very strong woman, but sometimes my strength just isn’t enough.

Your staff told me that I had to lose weight for the finals because I have too much fat on me, and also too big shoulders. They told me to eat less and then you would like me more.

I decided to leave. I’ve been Miss World Iceland, placed 14th after judging interview in Miss World, I won another pageant (Miss EM) and with all my qualities and good experience. I come with my passion and hard work to your pageant. 4 days before stage, they tell me that I’m too fat for you. Actually, if anyone tells me that I’m too fat or whatever, they just don’t deserve me. And that’s why I left. Miss Grand International doesn’t deserve my face, body, personality or heart.

I truly hope the organization opens their eyes, because the year is 2016, and if you are gonna hold an international pageant, you have to be able to see international beauty.

In my country, my body shape is perfect. And that’s what I’m gonna remember. No one will ever tell me anything else. I hope the finals will be amazing. I know the show will be.”

According to Miss Grand International’s website, the show is the world’s leading international beauty pageant and stands for “the betterment of humanity.”

“Yes, my shoulders are a bit broader than the other girls’ but that is because I was a member of the Icelandic national athletics team and I am proud of that,” Jónsdóttir told her local newspaper.

The beauty queen took to Instagram to show her support for friend and winner Ariska Putri of Indonesia on Tuesday night.
