Mom Is Brought to Tears When She Sees What Her Daughter and This Doll Have in Common

Long committed to creating dolls that represent every girl, American Girl has done something that shocked this mother.

When Meredith Bailey’s daughter Mia was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder that caused her to lose all of her hair, she only wanted one thing for her beautiful little girl—to feel normal and included.

In a trip to the American Girl Store for Mia’s eighth birthday, Meredith stopped in her tracks when she came across a doll that didn’t look like the others. Unlike most American Girl dolls in the store who have ethnic hair and long braids, this doll looked just like her daughter Mia—she had no hair!

“These dolls were not hidden in the back and had to be asked for…to little girls who may feel ‘alone’ and so desperately want to see dolls that reflect their beauty—it means more than you know,” Meredith wrote to American Girl in a post. “I cried many happy tears yesterday. Thank you so much for including ALL children.”

After learning the dolls could be purchased, Meredith placed an order so her daughter could have one on Christmas. It was Mia’s most awaited gift, and she was ecstatic to receive it.

In their annual birthday trip to their local American Girl Doll store, Meredith and her daughter were were so blown away by the first display, they screamed with excitement!

As they made their way up the escalator, the very first display at the top of the stairs had a doll sitting on a trundle bed without any hair. Mia dashed over to sit her doll up on the display with the other one. “These dolls weren’t hidden, they were up on display with pride,” Meredith beamed.

Stephanie Spanos, senior public relations manager for American Girl, responded to Meredith’s excitement by saying, “We love Meredith’s post and the happiness our dolls without hair have brought to her and her family.” She continued, “We know that when a girl owns a doll that is a reflection of her, it provides a sense of connection and belonging. It’s a responsibility we take very seriously, and girls like Meredith’s daughter inspire us every day.”

After seeing the dolls with no hair being displayed at their local store, Meredith shared her gratitude about what American Girl has done to include her daughter. “A little girl may feel more comfortable seeing my daughter in public because American Girl started a conversation between this child and her parent at a store, or when the magazine came to their house,” said Meredith. “I feel like the company almost empowers these girls.”
