Battling Bipolar and Self-Harm Disorders Have Demi Lovato Doing THIS With Fans Before Every Show

She’s at it again! Demi Lovato isn’t just talking about mental illness at fancy conventions. She’s actually doing something about it!

On Tuesday, singer and songwriter Demi Lovato gave THIS awesome speech at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (If you haven’t seen it, you need to). Well it turns out that the DNC isn’t the only place this pop sensation is taking her mental health advocacy. Instead of just talking about mental health, Demi is actually doing something about it!

Demi Lovato is currently on tour with Nick Jonas. Hours before every show, hundreds of fans are given the opportunity to join a mental health workshop that she calls “wellness workshops.” For the next hour or so, fans spend time hearing stories about self-worth, emotional setbacks and fresh starts.

She has invited Mike Bayer—a personal development coach out of Los Angeles and the man who she credits with saving her life, to go on tour with her and hold these wellness workshops, to discuss mental health issues with her fans.

For Lovato, mental health is deeply personal. In 2010 she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The pop star has battled a lifetime of other mental illness disorders including bulimia and self-harm. Since going through treatment, Demi Lovato has been a leading voice in the growing movement of people opening up about their own mental health conditions.

She openly talks about the work it takes every single day for her to stay healthy, and encourages other people who are struggling to speak out.

“Like millions of Americans, I am living with mental illness,” she said in her speech at the DNC. “But I am lucky. I had the resources and support to get treatment at a top facility. Unfortunately, too many Americans from all walks of life don’t get help, whether they fear the stigma or cannot afford treatment.”

When fans register for the chance to participate, there’s no guarantee that Demi will be there. But somehow she almost always comes to listen.

In the Budweiser Brew House at Verizon Center in Washington on Wednesday evening, Demi Lovato walked into the wellness workshop with tourmate Nick Jonas and his brother Joe in tow. The three stars waived to squealing fans before taking a seat.

Unlike most celebrity meet and greets though, fans did not rush to whip out their phones to capture the moment. They were told instead to turn off their phones, not just silence them. This was an opportunity for everyone in the room to pause for an hour, reflect, listen and understand that emotional health issues are a universal experience.

Demi, Joe, Nick and their manager, Phil, spent their time together with the fans speaking about career roadblocks that they’ve hit, crippling self-doubt and finding yourself again when life goes off course.

The personal development coach, Mike Bayer, who is touring with Lovato, has helped to coach celebrities through hard times. Bayer also has a broader operation that offers mental health help to everyday people who are suffering. His goal is to teach them the kind of life tools that, he says, are not taught in school. Clients learn how to heal themselves when they’re feeling lost or out of control.

This knowledge that each fan leaves with is what saved Demi Lovato’s life, and what keeps her healthy every day.

It’s absolutely incredible that this mega pop sensation isn’t just talking about mental health, she’s actually doing something about it. <3 You go Demi!
