Thea was living in a Cambodian orphanage after being rescued from two years of sexual abuse. It was in this orphanage where she met Elliot Costello, a man she’d inspire to start the Polished Man Project.
Every day kids are thrown into sex trafficking; for Thea it started with the death of her father. On top of being emotionally devastating, it also meant that her family no longer had any financial income.
Even though Elliot and Thea didn’t speak the same language, her story was still strong enough for Elliot to launch a campaign to bring awareness to victims.
“What really should have been a safe passage was anything but,” Costello said about Thea. “It struck me.”
Since they couldn’t talk, Elliot decided to play games with Thea. At one point, Thea started drawing all over Elliot’s hands, coloring his fingernails. This gave Elliot the idea for what would become a movement. He wanted men to start painting one fingernail to bring awareness to sexual abuse toward children all over the world.
The idea was so good that Thor himself, aka Chris Hemsworth, decided he would join.
“Being a [Polished Man] isn’t just about remembering to buy flowers, how many rounds you shout, or how much you lift,” Hemsworth wrote in the caption. “It’s about saying no to violence against children.”
The campaign has now gone viral thanks to the avenger and it’s super easy for anyone to join the cause.
Hemsworth also encouraged his brother, Liam Hemsworth, and Zac Efron to join the campaign by painting a fingernail, but we’re still waiting on those pictures.
No matter how many fans or friends you have, one thing is for sure, painting a nail seems like a pretty small price to pay to help the fight against sexual abuse of children!
